A Journey Through Albania
The trip to Albania began with an early morning flight from London Heathrow to Vienna, followed by a connecting flight to Tirana. The capital city, despite its complex history, presented a lively atmosphere with bustling streets and vibrant nightlife. A visit to Bunk’Art, a former communist-era bunker turned museum, provided a sobering reminder of the country’s past.
The journey continued with a visit to the Elbasan fortress, followed by a scenic drive to Lake Ohrid. The ancient ruins of a Christian basilica offered a glimpse into the region’s rich history. The town of Pogradec, situated on the lake’s shores, provided a tranquil setting.
In Korce, we explored the National Museum of Medieval Art, showcasing a collection of icons rescued from churches during the communist era. A visit to Voskopoje, a historic village known for its icon painters, offered a glimpse into the region’s artistic heritage.
Driving further with a drive through mountainous terrain, passing through the town of Erseke and stopping at the Tumulus of Kamenica, a prehistoric burial site. We also visited a hot springs near the Greek border before arriving in Permet, a town known for its rose production.
Gjirokaster, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offered a glimpse into Ottoman-era architecture. We explored the Gjirokaster Castle, offering panoramic views of the surrounding valley, and visited the Skenduli House, a beautifully preserved example of local architecture.
The journey continued with a visit to Butrint, an ancient Roman city, where we explored the ruins of temples and a basilica. Llogora National Park provided a scenic backdrop, with stunning views of the Ionian Sea.
Berat, known as the “City of a Thousand Windows,” offered a unique blend of Ottoman and Byzantine influences. We explored the historic castle district, visited ancient churches and mosques, and wandered through the vibrant neighborhoods along the Osum River.
The final destination was Kruje, a town steeped in history. We visited the Skanderbeg Museum, dedicated to the national hero who resisted Ottoman rule, and explored the local bazaar.
This trip to Albania offered a glimpse into the country’s rich history, culture, and natural beauty. From the vibrant capital city to the tranquil lakeside towns and the historic cities of Berat and Gjirokaster, Albania offers a diverse and captivating travel experience.
