Always looking for somewhere new to explore, when my other half popped over to Spain to visit a friend who’d flown in from Australia, I looked for somewhere I could travel to for a few days. Having not done much of the Baltics I landed on Riga in Latvia.
Latvia has an incredible, and not always great, history. Conquered multiple times and swapped between invading armies, its had to declare independence multiple times, the most recent of which was only in 1990 just prior to the collapse of the soviet union.
There’s loads to see and do in the old centre with beautiful parks, canals, old buildings (including some stunning art deco examples), squares, the Daugava river and several great museums.
