Marked by ancient trade and a maritime past, with evidence of civilization dating to 3000 BCE, Oman was a crucial centrr for the frankincense trade, with routes connecting to Egypt, Rome, and other ancient civilizations . After embracing Islam in the 7th century, the region became a major naval power, with trade routes reaching as far as China and East Africa.
It has a long history of independent rule, despite periods of Portuguese and other foreign control, eventually leading to modern Oman under Sultan Qaboos, who initiated significant social and economic reforms in 1970. Since then, and especially more recently, it has become popular on the tourist trail offerings a blend of ancient history, dramatic landscapes, and warm hospitality.
In November 2025 I visited, starting in Salalah in the south, before moving north to explore the deserts, mountains and forts in the north. You can read my full account of the trip and click the images below to view larger versions.
