Riga, Latvia

Always looking for somewhere new to explore, when my other half popped over to Spain to visit a friend who'd flown in from Australia, I looked for somewhere I could travel to for a few days. Having not done much of the Baltics I landed on Riga in Latvia. Latvia has an incredible, and not always great, history. Conquered multiple times and swapped between invading armies, its had to declare independence multiple times, the most recent of which was only in 1990 just prior to the collapse of the soviet union. There's…

Tanzania

I was last on a safari in 2011 when I went to Namibia, so when my travel buddy suggested this I thought why not. This time we were off to the Serengeti to catch up with the great migration of wildebeest as they head north to the Masai Mara. June was an ideal time to visit. Not only because of the migration, but being in the southern hemisphere Tanzania was just coming out of its rain season and as the summer ended temperatures were more reasonable. The lodges wee mainly tented camps,…

Tanzania Diary

A Journey Through Tanzania's Wild Heartlands From Dublin to the Foothills of Kilimanjaro The journey to Tanzania began in Dublin, marked by the typical trials of international travel. A series of minor but frustrating delays, including a collision involving a terminal bus and a technical issue with the aircraft, led to a 90-minute late departure from Dublin. The layover in London provided a chance to connect with a travel companion before the overnight flight to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The seven-hour flight proved sleepless, a common experience in economy class, especially on a…

Malta

Each year, through my use of a particular airline linked credit card, I get a couple of free return flights to elsewhere in Europe. This year, as the airline had just launched a route to Malta my partner and I decided to head there for a week. I had been to Malta before but I was very young (maybe around 8yo I think) so couldn't really remember too much. Malta is also full of important pre-historic temples and sites and I was keen to return as an adult to explore. What we…

Albania

This wasn't my best trip by a long shot. We started off heading South East from Tirana towards Lake Ohrid and the days were long without much to see. It wasn't until we arrived in the south - from Gjirokaster onwards that things started to pick up. Albania is desperately trying to shake off its history of communism and dictatorship, but I think, at least outside of Tirana, it still needs sometime to recover. The Albanian Alps in the North are meant to be stunning but unfortunately we didn't have time to…

Albania Diary

A Journey Through Albania The trip to Albania began with an early morning flight from London Heathrow to Vienna, followed by a connecting flight to Tirana. The capital city, despite its complex history, presented a lively atmosphere with bustling streets and vibrant nightlife. A visit to Bunk'Art, a former communist-era bunker turned museum, provided a sobering reminder of the country's past. The journey continued with a visit to the Elbasan fortress, followed by a scenic drive to Lake Ohrid. The ancient ruins of a Christian basilica offered a glimpse into the region's…
