Iran

“Why go there? Isn’t it dangerous?” was pretty much all I heard in response to telling people I was off to Iran. Whilst the west today has a bit of a confrontational relationship with Iran, it is in fact quite safe and the people are some of the friendliest and most hospitable I’ve ever met! In addition, the history of the region (it is ancient Persia after all) is quite amazing and with 2,500 year old cities such as Persepolis, and the beautiful garden city of Esfahan to see, its definitely worth…

Istanbul

Istanbul has a diverse and rich history. The fact it’s known by so many names (Byzantium, Constantinople) is testament to this. It has served as the capital of the Roman, Byzantine, Latin and Ottoman Empires and many of its rich historic sites are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It is also the only metropolis in the world that is situated on two continents, bridging both Europe and Asia. However it is also situated on a major fault line and the region is prone to earthquakes. Luckily magnificent buildings such as Hagia…

Ladakh, India

After my initial trip to India a couple of years ago I thought I knew what to expect. However choosing to head to the far Northern Jammu & Kashmir region, specifically an area called Ladakh is not like visiting other parts of India. The area is also known as Little Tibet as it is where many of the Tibetan people settled after fleeing the Chinese invasion. As a result it has its own very distinct culture and a large Buddhist community. Its remote location, in the foothills of the Western end of…

Morocco

Mention Morocco and most people think of Marrakech and the bustling medina and souks. However the country has far more to offer for those wanting to explore a little further afield. From the imperial cities of Rabat, Meknes and Fes in the North to Erfoud, Rissani and Tinerhir in the South. Even beautiful coastal towns such as Essaouira where you can watch from the historic battlements as the sun sets into the Atlantic Ocean. The rich heritage and culture along with vibrant markets, and of course the souks, means there’s something to…

Prague
A view down the River Vltava

Prague

To date I’ve only managed a short trip to Prague mainly for work, and when I was there the weather wasn’t great. However its definitely somewhere I’d like to explore more. Although it has a reputation for bachelor parties and boozy weekends, in truth this is confined to a very small area and the old buildings, gothic churches and sculpture on display more than make up for it. Prague castle (the biggest in the world) looks stunning from over the river when lit up at night, and the famous Charles Bridge contains…

Jordan
On of the deepest Wadis in Jordan and referred to in the bible as the river Arnon.

Jordan

In a scene from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade they ride down a narrow gorge and discover a huge temple carved into a rock face. This isn’t some fancy Hollywood CGI, but Petra, a UNESCO heritage site in Jordan. But there’s more to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan than the ancient city of Petra. In the South lies the vast nature reserve of Wadi Rum. A huge desert dotted with wind carved sandstone rocks towering almost 6,000ft. Whilst in the North you can discover Jerash, one of the the most complete…
